Fallout 76 was once a cautionary tale in developer overreach, an ambitious multiplayer world built off the back of Fallout 4 that bombed in a nuclear way when it launched in 2018, with many players writing it off for good. But credit where it's due: Bethesda Game Studio put in the work and supported the game. In a holiday update, the developer announced that since the Wastelanders update in 2020, more than 17 million players have visited the wastelands of Appalachia.
It's quite surprising, honestly, and makes us wonder whether it might be time to take another look. A free patch recently had players venturing to Atlantic City, putting us in mind of the truly great Fallout: New Vegas, and that's always going to be intriguing. A second instalment is on the way in 2024, called Atlantic City - America's Playground and the main map of Appalachia will be mutating further south later in 2024 to encompass the wooded heartland of Shenandoah in Virginia.
We don't know if it truly deserves to join No Man's Sky, Final Fantasy XIV, and Cyberpunk 2077 on our unofficial list of busted games that later got better, but the dedication has not gone unnoticed.
